Garfield Ridge Chicago has always occupied a pivotal spot in Chicago’s natural history: it was at this point that a swamp was formed during the rainy season, called Mud Lake. The lake effectively connected the Des Plaines River with Chicago and Lake Michigan, allowing French explorers and Native Americans to exploit a portage from the Great Lakes to the waterways feeding into the Mississippi River.
