Love Affair Between Nelson Algren And Simone de Beauvoir

Famed American author Nelson Algren and renowned French writer (and feminist) Simone de Beauvoir had a brief and intense romance that was kindled at Algren's apartment at 1523 West Wabansia Avenue in 1947. (The building has since been demolished and replaced.) The relationship did not persist, however, as de Beauvoir wished to remain in her native Paris, and Algren felt he was only capable of writing about Chicago.

Back in France, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre were lifelong friends and lovers, and Sartre once described her as a man's brains in a woman's body.

According to the Chicago Tribute Project, Algren also resided at 1958 West Evergreen Street.
